gabbylara213
8:09 PM
just wanted to check this out
im still getting the hang of this class system
8:09 PM

tichure
8:09 PM
I understand.
Basically I'm here on Wednesdays to answer your questions and to discuss your developing papers with you.
8:09 PM
Have you chosen something for your term paper?
8:10 PM

gabbylara213
8:12 PM
yes i have
i do have one question
8:12 PM
is it ok if we use the same work or topic for our presentation?
8:13 PM

tichure
8:15 PM
No. The idea is that the presentation that you're making is a different work, something that you have seen, read or experienced that the rest of us have not. While the term paper requires that I have read or seen the work because I'm grading you on your analysis of it, the presentation is more you sharing something with everybody else that you think they should experience or perhaps look at in a different way. That means I do not have to have read it or seen it. It also means that you're going to give us a brief short paragraph of the plot of the story, something you would not do for regular paper that you are discussing a work that I have seen or read.
that's why everyone can do the same work for the PAPER, which is sent directly to me and is not posted. However, the presentation is going to be something that is different for everybody because you're posting it for everybody else to see and to share.

8:20 PM
oh. i see now. ok so im going to have to change it.

tichure
8:21 PM
Okay. What did you choose for your research paper

gabbylara213
8:23 PM
Jonathan Demme's Silence of the Lambs

tichure
8:25 PM
good choice. Have you found research for it?

gabbylara213
8:29 PM
yes i have. I found a paper that looks at the cultural analysis of the work.

tichure
8:32 PM
Have you found a discussion by the director concerning the making of the movie? You need more than one critical perspective, and Marxist criticism, which explains why the author/director did what he did, would be a good choice.

gabbylara213
8:34 PM
No I have not but will look into it.
Thank you.
8:35 PM

tichure
8:35 PM

Hello professor

8:39 PM

tichure
8:39 PM
how can i help you

Leslie
8:40 PM
I just wanted to see if there was any information or conversation so far
For the presentation it’s due the week we choose right
8:40 PM

tichure
8:40 PM
yiou just missed gabby
yes
8:40 PM
when did you choose
8:41 PM

Leslie
8:41 PM
And no strict guidelines or rubric correct? Just MLA format or the video and proper works cited right? I believe I selected week 5
And the list of sources is due for our paper in week 5, right?
8:42 PM

tichure
8:42 PM
yes
its general
8:43 PM
You are going to give us a plot summary in a very very short body paragraph because you're taking into account that, unlike the research paper, which I HAVE seen the movie or read the work, this is guessing that the readers, your fellow students, have not seen or read the work and therefore you need to give us the plot.
8:43 PM
Then you get to the analysis.
8:43 PM

Leslie
8:44 PM
Okay, thank you professor. Will there be an archive of this conversation as well? In case Gabby may have had some questions that may help enlighten myself as well to questions I may not know I have?

tichure
8:45 PM
Absolutely. And vice versa

Leslie
8:45 PM
Sounds simple enough, sources are usually my weakness. I’m a fairly strong writer but focusing on sources and not being overly specific in searches is always my downfall.

tichure
8:45 PM
in reality you both were asking about the presentation, but just different aspects of it so it's helpful that you are both here.
What is your topic for the research paper?
8:45 PM
And what is your topic for the presentation?
8:45 PM

Leslie
8:46 PM
My topic for research paper is Edgar Allan Poe's poetry works: Annabel Lee, The Raven, The Haunted Palace, Spirits of the dead, and The Valley of Unrest. I think my focus will be his thoughts on death
For the presentation I’ll be taking a psychoanalytic approach to Annabel Lee
8:47 PM

tichure
8:47 PM
Well, you don't have to hit all of those. More importantly, you want to find a theme that is little bit more specific than merely death. Moreover, you cannot cover the same work in your research paper and presentation, so you will have to remove Annabel Lee from your paper analysis.
So I would look at maybe three poems, because his are generally long, that are going to talk about a specific thing, such as the loss of a woman or a discussion with a specter or some other more narrow down topic that will give you a more particular point rather than the fact that he talks about death, which is too generalized and too obvious for that kind of analysis.
8:48 PM

Leslie
8:48 PM
Can I just look at the other 4? I believe the instructions may have confused me into thinking I needed 5 works by him

tichure
8:49 PM
You will have more to work with if you focus on his constant referral to being buried, especially being buried alive or the notion of that lost woman character
well it depends on Their length
8:49 PM
your choosing an author whose poems tend to be pretty long.
8:49 PM

Leslie
8:49 PM
Cask of Amontillado would do well in that aspect I think

tichure
8:49 PM
So three would be plenty, but most importantly, you want to have not just three poems by a growling pole about death, but perhaps about a particular aspect of his large catalog of death stories.
Absolutely
8:49 PM
for example, if you did cask, the black cat, and the telltale heart, which I know are short stories and not poems, they all have in common the notion of burial and of some kind of life emanating from the buried thing, whether it's because the individual or animal was buried alive or because it has somehow reanimated itself.
8:50 PM

Leslie
8:50 PM
So focus on the psychosis behind being buried alive? Maybe he has a fear of it? And go into a psychoanalysis of it

tichure
8:50 PM
Likewise, if you look at to Helen, Annabel Lee, and the Raven, they are all about the loss of a woman and this notion of the guy who is left behind grieve with nothing for solace.

Leslie
8:51 PM
I feel like there’s a lot of variety and choices with Poe, maybe I should look a little closer at my favorites and go from there

tichure
8:52 PM
Psychoanalytically on the author, you would find out about his life, and when you do, you'll realize that the women in his life died from tuberculosis, which essentially is drowning. This sense of basically being suffocated is certainly in the context of the stories. Moreover, and perhaps certainly something that would have influenced him, is that in the mid-1800s, there was a major fear of being buried alive because of various diseases or maladies that would make you comatose, and a drunk or inefficient doctor might pronounce you dead. There's all kinds of devices for letting people know that the individual who had been buried was actually alive.
It's where we get terms like graveyard shift
8:52 PM
dead ringer
8:52 PM
etc.
8:52 PM
exactly.
8:52 PM
In other words, everything that he writes, with few exceptions, is about death. Narrowing down
8:52 PM
will help you to have a more focused essay.
8:52 PM

Leslie
8:53 PM
Thank you professor you’ve been very helpful! I’ll look closer into it and update my topic soon

tichure
8:53 PM
Also, when you're discussing Edgar Allan Poe, you obviously have plenty of secondary source material. You may find one of his longer works, whether it's a short story or a very long poem like the Raven, when analyzed through three different critical perspectives, will yield you enough material for your final paper
for sure.
8:53 PM
I'll be here next week.
8:53 PM
You can also always send an email to me and I will respond quickly
8:53 PM

Leslie
8:54 PM
I appreciate that, thank you professor. I’ll email if I have any further questions
