7:03 PM
hey nat. stil loadoing. say tuned

natojeda
7:03 PM
will do
Am I the only student connected?
7:06 PM

tichure
7:07 PM
For now, yes, but let's Get to some issues.
do you have any questions?
7:07 PM

natojeda
7:08 PM
yes. Is it for the research paper or the presentation that each student has to choose an individual work from your list?
or can more than one student choose the same work?
7:09 PM
from your list
7:09 PM

tichure
7:09 PM
For the research paper, everybody could choose the same topic, and I do encourage people to work together. Obviously, you will each write your paper, but having helped during the research and picking critical analysis would be useful.
It is the presentation that is one person per topic and one topic per person. That's because, unlike paper, which gets sent to me, the presentation is posted online.
7:10 PM

natojeda
7:11 PM
ok. so the presentation will be a video we will submit? or will we have to do it through live video?

tichure
7:12 PM
Well some people like submitting videos, and if you can figure out how to submit a video to blackboard, you're more than welcome to. The vast majority of people will simply write a Brief essay.
The same way that they would for research paper. It's just shorter
7:12 PM

natojeda
7:14 PM
Ok. so you are saying the presentation is kind of like a mini essay we submit on blackboard? And it does not have to be a video, correct?

tichure
7:14 PM
yes
and that is correct. The video is an option for those who prefer that. Personally, I would write a paper but that's just me
7:14 PM
the thing about this is unlike the research paper, which I have to have either read or watch or whatever, this topic that you're presenting for the presentation is based on the notion that NOBODY has read or seen the work that you're about to analyze. That means you'll have to spend little time giving us a plot summary.
7:14 PM
For paper, the plot summary is about five sentences. Don't get lost in it. For a video, it's about 90 seconds.
7:15 PM

natojeda
7:17 PM
Okay. And for week 1 one of the assigned readings is Roots of Horror: Gothic. Im a little confused on where exactly we get the material from
Night Surf by Stephen King i would just find it online, right?
7:17 PM

tichure
7:18 PM
If you don't have Night surf I will send it to you. In fact, I will send out to everybody.

natojeda
7:18 PM
That would be great. Thank you.

tichure
7:18 PM
the stuff that doesn't have a link is stuff that we would talk about in chat. Some of it also is going to be on my website. There is a discussion of the history of horror fiction on my website.

natojeda
7:20 PM
on englit.org?

tichure
7:20 PM
yes
I will refresh the link later this week
7:21 PM

natojeda
7:22 PM
Can you tell me where or the website I can find the discussions?

tichure
7:23 PM
but if you go over to the horror literature resources on the "I net resource list" you will find some material on the history of horror films
as well as a link to the Edgar Allan Poe material.
7:23 PM
there's also material on children's literature, which is rooted in some aspects of horror fiction, some material for film specifically, and of course some material in folklore and urban legends
7:24 PM

natojeda
7:25 PM
Yes, I see it.
Thank you
7:25 PM

tichure
7:25 PM
I have another diatribe on the general history of horror fiction but I think I need to reestablish that link.
I will check it out after chat.
7:25 PM

natojeda
7:27 PM
Sounds good.

tichure
7:28 PM
Anything else I can help you with?
Have you chosen a topic for your paper? Have you chosen a topic for your presentation?
7:28 PM

natojeda
7:30 PM
I have not chosen a topic for the paper or presentation but I will do so by tomorrow. Are any topics taken/
?
7:30 PM
May I make an appointment to speak with you tomorrow during office hours?
7:31 PM

tichure
7:32 PM
The only way to know whether any topics are taken are to look at the folder and see what has been taken.
I will be in my office between 240 and 330. You're more than welcome to stop by
7:32 PM

natojeda
7:33 PM
Great. Thank you for your time Professor Eiland.
I have no further questions.
7:33 PM

tichure
7:33 PM
you're welcome. Pleasure talking to you.

natojeda
7:33 PM
Likewise =)

what can I help you with.
7:41 PM
Welcome back Nat
7:41 PM
hahahaha
7:41 PM
what are the odds
7:41 PM

Nathan 1
7:42 PM
Hello, just had some difficulties with connecting

natojeda
7:42 PM
haha I am just reviewing our conversation. Don't mind me.

tichure
7:43 PM
no problem Nat.
What's up Nathan. What can I help you with
7:43 PM

Nathan 1
7:45 PM
Well, I apologize for my dumb question, but I have read through the syllabus, calendar, etc. and I'm still confused with where to look for the writing assignments.

tichure
7:47 PM
Nathan, did you read the WELCOME letter That I sent you
7:47 PM
it noted that all the reading assignments are on the calendar
7:49 PM
and all of the WRITTEN assignments are on blackboards discussion board
7:49 PM
the assignment themselves are in the folders in a thread called, oddly enough, THE assignment.
7:49 PM
There is also a separate due date posting in each folder as well
7:49 PM
check it out now. Look for the assignment for your first draft of the paper

heyKod
do you have any questions?
7:53 PM

kodomo
7:53 PM
Hi!

tichure
7:53 PM
Nathan, did you find it

kodomo
7:53 PM
No, not really, just here to listen haha

tichure
7:54 PM
hahaha
ok
7:54 PM

Nathan 1
7:54 PM
Yes, I did. That's it? Wow. Alright, I thought there would be more to it than that.

tichure
7:55 PM
as I mentioned to nat earlier, you will have to choose a presentation that is unique to everybody else in the course. Have any of you chosen and posted The topic?

kodomo
7:55 PM
I think I've chosen mine.
It can be anything right?
7:55 PM

tichure
7:55 PM
did you post it

kodomo
7:55 PM
No not yet

tichure
7:55 PM
yes as long as it's horror
- Nathan 1 left the Main Room. ( 8:03 PM ) -

kodomo
7:55 PM
Ok great!

tichure
7:57 PM
the idea is that your audience, the rest of us, have not read or seen or experienced this thing. You need to give us a Brief plot description before you analyze it.
You need to choose one critical perspective through which will analyze the work.
7:57 PM
This is not a discussion about what you like. This is a discussion about what it means based on a specific translation.
7:57 PM

kodomo
7:58 PM
Ok. I think I want to use psychoananalytic criticism. I think I understand it, hope I do haha!

tichure
7:58 PM
More importantly, I hope you do
hahahaha
7:58 PM
what work?
7:58 PM

kodomo
7:58 PM
House of Leaves, since I can't use it for the term paper lol!
I hope you do read it, it's very interesting!
7:58 PM

tichure
7:59 PM
That's the perfect place for it KOd
you know what, after I read your analysis, I will probably want to pick it up
7:59 PM

kodomo
8:00 PM
Cool!
So after reading Night Surf, we should watch Nosferatu?
8:01 PM

tichure
8:01 PM
yes
this material is designed to give you a breadth of horror literature.
8:02 PM
Is there a link to night surf? I have Not looked, but I intended to send you all a copy.
8:02 PM

kodomo
8:02 PM
No, I looked it up

tichure
8:03 PM
it's available online KOD?

kodomo
8:03 PM
yes, should I send a link?

tichure
8:03 PM
if so, can you send me the link. I just post in in the calendar
cool deal
8:03 PM

kodomo
8:03 PM
Ok

tichure
8:03 PM
I appreciate that.

kodomo
8:06 PM
argh, it won't let me cut and paste the link here! Hang on, I'll email you sorry! haha

tichure

Brie
8:07 PM
Hey professor I have a question

tichure
8:08 PM
hey

Brie. Shoot

Brie
8:08 PM
Are the message board discussion groups just like your other de classes

tichure
8:08 PM
not really
in this class, you are essentially building a single paper
8:08 PM

Brie
8:08 PM
I was a bit confused when I was reading the previous chat

tichure
8:08 PM
and the other thing that I do is give me various bits and pieces, such as your attitude works cited, you do a peer edit,

Brie
8:09 PM
Introduction chat that is
Ohhhh
8:09 PM

tichure
8:09 PM
well the previous chat, which should be off, discusses nothing about something like discussion boards or responses and stuff like that.
You're doing a paper first draft
8:09 PM

Brie
8:09 PM
Ok

tichure
8:09 PM
a peer edit for somebody else's draft
annotated works cited
8:09 PM
a final draft of the paper
8:09 PM
and of course you doing one unique thing, which is that presentation
8:09 PM
that you're choosing something and then presenting it to the rest of the class
8:09 PM
that's it
8:10 PM

Brie
8:10 PM
Yeah I saw that

tichure
8:10 PM
that's it

Brie
8:10 PM
That's cool.

tichure
8:10 PM
this is supposed to be fun
hahaha
8:10 PM
and enlightening
8:10 PM
and entertaining
8:10 PM

Brie
8:10 PM
I love horror genre

tichure
8:10 PM
it doesn't mean that there's no work, but if you like material, it makes it easier
there you go
8:10 PM

Brie
8:10 PM
My all time favorite book is Brahm Stokers Dracula
Sorry if I misspelled that
8:10 PM

tichure
8:10 PM
as a classic
and
8:10 PM
no H
8:11 PM
and
8:11 PM
there's a lot of secondary source material available.
8:11 PM

Brie
8:11 PM
Perfect! I hope no one has chosen it I need to get on blackboard tonight and pick it otherwise I have many other films I'm in love with
I know Dracula is a book by the way I just worded the previous sentence incorrectly lol
8:12 PM

tichure
8:13 PM
hahahaha

Brie
8:13 PM
If Dracula is taken could I do a film like "Nightmare on Elm Street" that is my most favorite movie

tichure
8:13 PM
For something as popular as that, you might want to choose early.
Sure
8:13 PM
again, you can choose for the PRESENTATION, whatever you want as long as no one else has taken it. For your paper, multiple people can do the same topic.
8:14 PM

Brie
8:14 PM
Perfect nightmares are so intriguing to me
I'm a weirdo I enjoy them haha
8:14 PM

tichure
8:16 PM
hahahhaha
well, you've come to the right place
8:16 PM

kodomo
8:16 PM
quick question, what do we have to include in the initial presentation message besides the title of the work and week we want to present

tichure
8:16 PM
as a famous musician once said, "when the going gets weird, the weird turn pro."

kodomo
8:16 PM
haha very good!

Brie
8:16 PM
Well thanks professor. We will be discussing Nasferatu (not sure if I spelled that right) next week correct

tichure
8:17 PM
Well actually we should discuss night surf next week.
This week is two days so I can’t expect everybody ran out and read the story.
8:17 PM
So how about we hit it up next week and talk a little Stephen King.
8:17 PM

Brie
8:17 PM
Yaaasssss I love Stephen King!

tichure
8:17 PM
This week is more about getting everybody oriented or as the British say orientated

Brie
8:17 PM
Lol

tichure
8:18 PM
I know. What do the British know about English?

Brie
8:18 PM
I must've read the syllabus wrong

tichure
8:18 PM
pfft
Anywho, Folks, any other questions
8:18 PM
issues
8:18 PM
problems
8:18 PM
clarifications
8:18 PM
random declarations
8:18 PM

kodomo
8:18 PM
haha nope I'm good

Brie
8:19 PM
I'm good too I just need to get reading and declare my presentation

tichure
8:19 PM
great.

Brie
8:19 PM
I'm headed to blackboard after this

tichure
8:19 PM
How about we discuss Stephen King next week?
It will be uplifting and hopeful unsure
8:19 PM

Brie
8:19 PM
Sounds great

tichure
8:19 PM
I am sure

kodomo
8:19 PM

tichure

\org
8:20 PM

kodomo
8:20 PM
I emailed you a few minutues ago

Brie
8:20 PM
Ah I'm so excited best choice of Humanity class for me

tichure
8:20 PM
fantastic.
Well, Bree, how about we get through it first
8:20 PM
hahahah
8:20 PM

Brie
8:21 PM
Lol

tichure
8:21 PM
maybe this is horror literature for different reason than the reading material

Brie
8:21 PM
Hahahahahaha

tichure
8:21 PM
(6)

kodomo
8:21 PM
Oh dear!!
that does sound scary
8:21 PM
