hello Ray, how can I help you

103Ray 1
7:58 PM
I chose the Star Wars paper. I have to choose one of the episodes, watch it and then analyze it right?

tichure
7:59 PM
Yes. Do you have in particular so that you are inclined to analyze?

103Ray 1
8:01 PM
I was thinking the Phantom Menace

tichure
8:02 PM
Have you seen it already?
And you have video… The DVD?
8:02 PM

103Ray 1
8:03 PM
Yea when I was a kid. It was actually the first episode I was introduced. But I might have to watch it again. Yes I do.

tichure
8:05 PM
the DVD will be helpful because the actors will help you with your analysis. If you find stereo in which the director explained why and how movie together, you have elements for your Marxist criticism.
Likewise, if you get information from Lucas himself, which is available on YouTube and also on many of the DVDs, you have more information that would apply to that and to another perspective that will be useful for down road, and collocated burst of symbolism called criticism. Lucas relies on that great deal and makes lots of references to it, which pretty much Helps you to write a paper in a very obvious and significant way.
8:06 PM
however, your first goal is to start gathering resources. Keep in mind that we're looking for ballets analysis rather than just fansites. Google search will help you find your views with the director, and you can also find information from Lucas himself through that particular Avenue, but remember that anything from a fansite is not a valid analysis. Unless you have a work from someone who is an actual movie critic (Pauline Kael, Tim Cogshell etc.), someone who is published and understands moviemaking and analysis, it does not count.
8:09 PM
Get together your nine resources, in addition to the movie, to create your annotated works cited. That will definitely let you know whether not you are on the right track in terms of choosing this particular subject
8:09 PM
do you have an idea about critical perspectives you may apply? all the sleep you can find information about the Director's intention etc. etc. you have Marxist criticism.
8:10 PM
but you need at least one more for the first paper draft
8:11 PM

103Ray 1
8:13 PM
Oh okay I need to do a little more research

tichure
8:14 PM
reality: is an excellent choice. Anyone of these movies is an excellent choice, especially the early ones. They are now highly regarded and they are much analyzed both from a fan standpoint and from a critical analysis perspective. Furthermore, George Lucas has been interviewed endlessly about his work.
That doesn't necessarily mean this an easy task. It simply makes it easier and someone who is chosen something a bit more secure. If you chose this because you like it, use that to try to find as much valid information as possible. Also be aware that some points were likely going to be explaining how, from at least one more perspectives, these are bad movies
8:15 PM
it doesn't mean that they are actually bad movies. It's all about applying perspectives, which is really the point of class.
8:15 PM
The fact that the new series of Star Wars movies has both women and people of color as primary characters is not accidental. It is a result of response to criticism of previous movies which tend to be very male and very white in terms of power structure.
8:16 PM
It doesn't mean that they're bad. It just means that you know how often these two translate fees from perspectives of groups Who might find that the problematic. That's a good thing for you.
8:17 PM

8:17 PM
any questions
8:17 PM
or clarifications you need?
8:17 PM

103Ray 1
8:22 PM
When you say nine resources do you mean like interviews?

tichure
8:23 PM
your limited interviews, although it is good choices. You must come out with 10 total resources; The movie is one of them. extras from the movie would be A different resource.
interviews with the author or director online Would each be a different resource.

8:24 PM
some documentaries are not interviews.
8:24 PM
Also, reviews of the movie
8:24 PM
from say a feminist viewpoint
8:24 PM
an African American viewpoint
8:24 PM
LGBT Q viewpoint
8:24 PM
are all Different analyses and resources.
8:25 PM
you need to find a total of nine things in addition to the movie itself so that you know and I know that you have the material to write, by the end of the semester, four different critical analyses of this movie
8:25 PM
Start your research now.
8:26 PM
There is material available on Gale and Esco that have to do with the Star Wars series and the director specifically
8:27 PM
and by director I mean Lucas. I know he did not Direct this particular one.
8:27 PM

103Ray 1
8:28 PM
Oh okay thanks for clarifying and one more thing. When is the annotated works cited due?

tichure
8:28 PM
you also will find some information on the director who DID rdirect this movie\
is posted on canvas.
8:29 PM
I think it's about a week or two.
8:29 PM
Obviouslystart now.
8:29 PM
\ all be aware that the library, because of my films as literature course, has specific books and journals with information about directors and moviemaking
8:30 PM
many of these are available online as e-books through the library.
8:30 PM
Others will require they make a visit, but they can be very valuable resources.
8:30 PM

103Ray 1
8:31 PM
Yes I will start right away. Thank you for your time.

tichure
8:32 PM
Fantastic. If you have any questions, send me an email.
Hopefully if you get stuck, I can help you get unstuck
8:32 PM

8:50 PM
hi there! I don't have any questions I can think of at the moment. I had just downloaded the application to see how it functions. Although I do have an idea on my research topic

tichure
8:50 PM
And what did you choose from the list

8:51 PM

Josh103 1 #2
8:52 PM
I chose to do Star Wars Episode 8

tichure
8:54 PM
have you found any material concerning it?
Do you have DVD?
8:54 PM
If you do, it is going to have information from the director, and likely Lucas himself, that explains the making of the movie which will help you for Marxist criticism. Later on in the semester, it will also help you, if you have material from George Lucas, on applying mythological criticism, as that is one of his standard approaches.
8:55 PM
Luckily, because of the focus on women and people of color, there is a lot of direct analysis from movie CRITICS (not movie reviewers) that offer feminist and cultural responses to the work.
8:59 PM

Josh103 1 #2
8:59 PM
I see. That sounds helpful. I will try and get the DVD as soon as possible.

tichure
8:59 PM
These will be posted in journals, newspapers, magazines, and literary and educational websites like NPR, PBS, salon.com, Rolling Stone etc.
also, there should be some information available to you directly to the library. I would suggest strongly that you talk to the reference librarians. They understand how to look up stuff for movies and also can help you find other resources that will be appropriate for this type of analysis.
9:00 PM
Also, on my website, there is movie material because I teach film as literature. That may be helpful if there is information that leads you to either Star Wars or George Lucas or perhaps the director of this action movie, which you also need information for.
9:00 PM

Josh103 1 #2
9:02 PM
I will look into those, thank you for the info!

tichure
9:02 PM
Gather together your annotated works cited… 10 items, one of them being the movie itself, that you can use for literary analysis. Remember, fansites do not count.
You got it. As soon as you start gathering your information, we can have a conversation about ways to translate this particular work.
9:02 PM
If you have any questions, shoot me an email. That way you don't spend a lot of time just going in circles.
9:03 PM
Any other questions I can help you with right now.
9:03 PM

Josh103 1 #2
