feminist criticism looks at the work in context of how gender roles are
portrayed...whether fairly or unfairly accurately or not..obviously, as
time passes, the perspective will also change.

based on what, boni?

    jacky184 :. . . . msg#61 Thu, Jul 1, 7:07PM PST
because that was how women were portrayed at that time and earlier.
women were suppose to 'wait' on their husbands

    rauln :. . . . msg#62 Thu, Jul 1, 7:08PM PST
Because she stood behind her husband most of the time

msg#67 Thu, Jul 1, 7:09PM PST
is she a round character?

    rauln :. . . . msg#68 Thu, Jul 1, 7:09PM PST

ok, raul, so good or bad?

chope2 (if you don*t know where you*re going, you*ll end up

tech, it seems to me that most of what happens in this play is
desperation, and linda seems as desperate as willy is. she can't abide
willy's crumbling because what has she got left? she even defends him
against the supposed threat of his sons

picture
    anglishtecher (*~drama and death of a salesman~*):. . . .
msg#71 Thu, Jul 1, 7:10PM PST
so does she have conflict, chope, and what is it?

picture
    anglishtecher (*~drama and death of a salesman~*):. . . .
msg#72 Thu, Jul 1, 7:10PM PST
why is it important for her to stand behind her old man...is it at any
cost?

    jacky184 :. . . . msg#73 Thu, Jul 1, 7:10PM PST
i think her conflict is to realize that willy was not what she pictured
him as, this great wonderful man

picture
    anglishtecher (*~drama and death of a salesman~*):. . . .
msg#74 Thu, Jul 1, 7:11PM PST
what did she think..what is reality in HER eyes, jacky?

    rauln :. . . . msg#75 Thu, Jul 1, 7:11PM PST
Because her old man is the heart of the family

chope2 (if you don*t know where you*re going, you*ll end up
someplace else):. . . . msg#76 Thu, Jul 1, 7:12PM PST
her conflict is between holding the family together, being a good
mother, and maintaining her position as a wife, being taken care of
(an illusion, here), supporting her husband.

picture
    anglishtecher (*~drama and death of a salesman~*):. . . .
msg#77 Thu, Jul 1, 7:12PM PST
so support him at any cost, raul?

picture
    anglishtecher (*~drama and death of a salesman~*):. . . .
msg#78 Thu, Jul 1, 7:12PM PST
all of these sound one way, chope

    rauln :. . . . msg#79 Thu, Jul 1, 7:13PM PST
the man is the one who take the final decisions in a family back then

    bonitater :. . . . msg#80 Thu, Jul 1, 7:13PM PST
She was happy to be free of him at the end.

    jacky184 :. . . . msg#81 Thu, Jul 1, 7:13PM PST
yes, she believed that, that was how her life was and that's how she
lived it, supporting willy

picture
    anglishtecher (*~drama and death of a salesman~*):. . . .
msg#82 Thu, Jul 1, 7:13PM PST
so is this a realistic portrayal, raul?

    pintop1735 :. . . . msg#83 Thu, Jul 1, 7:13PM PST
Hello everyone.

    bonitater :. . . . msg#84 Thu, Jul 1, 7:13PM PST

be with him.

picture

msg#85 Thu, Jul 1, 7:13PM PST

yes, that's true. it sound like it, but how it feels to me is that she
wants to be a giving person, living for others, but she's also protecting
her position. i'll think about it...

picture
    anglishtecher (*~drama and death of a salesman~*):. . . .

is she happy with that, jacky?

picture
    anglishtecher (*~drama and death of a salesman~*):. . . .

I was looking at the last sentence the wrong way.

    powermcwoman :. . . . msg#93 Thu, Jul 1, 7:14PM PST

picture
    anglishtecher (*~drama and death of a salesman~*):. . . .
msg#94 Thu, Jul 1, 7:14PM PST
what is her supposed pay back..any housewife's supposed payback,
chope..boni...jacky..raul...

    jacky184 :. . . . msg#95 Thu, Jul 1, 7:14PM PST
yes i think she is very happy with the way her life turned out because
she never complained. she was only supported as being very
supportive for willy and his decisions

    bonitater :. . . . msg#96 Thu, Jul 1, 7:14PM PST
She said, 'We're free.' I thought that meant that she was happy to be
free of him, but now I think she means about money.

picture

    bonitater :. . . . msg#101 Thu, Jul 1, 7:15PM PST
I saw it as her saying that she was free of him, free to be the way she
chose.

    powermcwoman :. . . . msg#102 Thu, Jul 1, 7:15PM PST
She would be an outcast.

    rauln :. . . . msg#103 Thu, Jul 1, 7:15PM PST

picture

is complaint the only sign of unhappiness, jacky..and is she
uncomplaining with EVERYONE?

    bonitater :. . . . msg#105 Thu, Jul 1, 7:16PM PST
But then I looked at it carefully and it said 'We're free and clear' and I
remembered about their money situation.

msg#106 Thu, Jul 1, 7:16PM PST

    jacky184 :. . . . msg#107 Thu, Jul 1, 7:16PM PST
i think she meant when she said that 'we're free' there was a release
of the burden of money problems and the other problems he had,
psychologically

    bonitater :. . . . msg#108 Thu, Jul 1, 7:16PM PST

The kids didn't respect him because they just walked out on him in the

They listen to what she tells them.

okay, ricky. she was reacting, not acting. her response was to him, not

i don't feel that anyone is in control, here. sure, the boys listen to her

chope2 (if you don*t know where you*re going, you*ll end up

basically, willy is ultimately in control. how can you get a handle on
someone's death?

    jacky184 :. . . . msg#153 Thu, Jul 1, 7:25PM PST
well i think biff had control in the end. not so much everybody, but
control of his own life

i agreed with chope2 point i think there is no such leader

remember, there is no indication in these stories when we see this type of conflcit that there is ACTUAL DESIRE to marry mom..it is more a symbolic urge..thus you may find a man like yer dad or a woman like yer mom..but not marry yer mom or dad …and you will find the same sex parent less tolerable then the opposite sex parent…and vice versa as well.
