Hey Jamie. How's it going
7:08 PM

Jamie
7:08 PM
hi. not sure is this the chat room for english 101

tichure
7:08 PM
This is it.

Jamie
7:09 PM
Oh okay. I thought there would be more students on it.

tichure
7:09 PM
well to begin with, people filter in and out. More to the point, I'm here to answer questions that you specifically may have.
What can I help you with
7:10 PM

Jamie
7:10 PM
Yes! Proffesor I sent you an email today wasn't sure if you had recieved it.

tichure
7:10 PM
well if you have a question, ask me the question now.

Jamie
7:11 PM
There are so many hyperlinks in this course and so much reading but not much of things being turned in and I'm a little confused.

tichure
7:11 PM
well, what you should have read was discussions of character, plot and interpretive versus escapist literature.
You should also read the story "tooth and claw"
7:11 PM
and you should have read or begin reading the story "what you pawn I will redeem"
7:11 PM
and you might even read something on paper format.
7:11 PM
Does that sound about right
7:12 PM

Jamie
7:12 PM
Yes.

tichure
7:12 PM
that means you're going to be presenting your ability to do something in the form of papers and responses. To that end, you need to have enough information and enough material in order to to do that.
. To that end, you will notice that there is an RESPONSE to "what you pawn I will redeem" in which you then are able to show me that you understand what paragraphing is, how to use primary text quotation and citation, and of course that you understand character and or plot elements
7:13 PM
all of which you needed to read before you can write a response that uses all of those elements.
7:14 PM
Have you read the Sherman Alexie story?
7:15 PM

Jamie
7:17 PM
Yes, good I understood that. I also read that throughout the course theres only 5 reponses we need to make with structured writing of 2-5 paragraph long. Correct?

tichure
7:17 PM
Not exactly.
A response is three paragraphs. In fact, there's nothing less than three paragraphs that you will submit to me.
7:17 PM

Jamie
7:18 PM
I haven't reaad that one yet. Because I was actually getting nervous that I wasn't understanding this course but I think I got.

tichure
7:18 PM
Everything as an introduction. Everything has a conclusion. Everything has at least one body paragraph, and it is that minimum three that you will apply to a response. When you get to a paper And test, you will be in the 5 to 10 paragraph or more range.

Jamie
7:18 PM
Okay.

tichure
7:18 PM
One of the problems of people have with my class is that they've Artie taken a bunch of online courses that simply require you to post some little blathering online once a week to demonstrate that you're paying attention.

Jamie
7:19 PM
Oh my goodness! yes exactly! And that's why I was getting nervous of missing something or maybe I wasn't understanding.
Now that you've said that I totally get it now.
7:20 PM

This class requires that you learn some fairly complex things fairly early on covering three elements. One of them is formatting, as most people have not been required to write a college-level MLA formatted research paper. The other is research itself. Some people have never been required to do actual research. Instead they been allowed to simply explain their OPINION about something, whether it's rooted in reality or not. Finally, obviously, you're also learning specific literary terms
.
7:21 PM
For your first paper, the learning curve is fairly steep because you have no concept, as far as I know anyway, that you understand what MLA formatting and quotation and citation is. Therefore you h
7:21 PM
ave to learn the basics
7:21 PM
before you even start
7:21 PM

Jamie
7:23 PM
Okay. Got it.
Thank you Professor.
7:23 PM

tichure
7:24 PM
now you have the basic elements you're going to start writing. And you're going to be writing not in little brief bits but in larger bits that are actual analysis which obviously take a lot more time than simply logging into canvas for 15 minutes in order to get your participation grade
in response is going to require that you look carefully at, for example, a specific character and go back through the story and look for quotations and other elements that you will use as support for your claim that the character is round or flat or both and exhibits or does not exhibit internal conflict, fundamental character change, stereotyping, or complexity.
7:24 PM
Likewise, you're looking for at least one or more external conflict that you must not only identify but also label.
7:24 PM
So while you're doing fewer works, for most people this class is MORE work than the average course.
7:25 PM
That's why English 101 And English 103 both required for graduation with particular certificates, is often put off and has a very high drop in very high failure rate compared to other courses.
7:25 PM
they require demonstration of the skill set and particular application of critical thinking and literary analysis
7:25 PM

Jamie
7:27 PM
okay.

tichure
7:27 PM
now that you've done some of that reading, you will have an opportunity to demonstrate to me that you understand the formatting, the content, and the like.
Likewise, when you read something and you don't have a specific context for it, it is less likely to stick in your head. Now that you have read a story or two, you would go back through the stories and start applying the literary terms and in doing so he will be going over the literary terms again to make sure that you got it correct
7:28 PM
which will help you to really understand how the terms work and then be truly learning them rather than simply being able to identify them in a multiple guess test

Jamie
7:30 PM
Makes sense. Got it. Thank you, I'm going to go over the reading again.

tichure
7:31 PM
fantastic. As you do so, you could as practice create a response to analyze Junior in "tooth and claw" and you have an opportunity to submit that later in the semester when I give you an option to submit ANY work that you've written about that you had not covered so far.
Also, you can simply read the Alexie story and apply this discussion because you will be doing it for your first paper anyway.
7:31 PM
In other words, you would choose a character from the story and apply character analysis.
7:32 PM
Round or flat or both
7:32 PM
internal conflict, complexity, stereotype, fundamental character change
7:32 PM
plus external conflicts
7:32 PM
man versus man
7:32 PM
man versus natural elements
7:32 PM
man versus man made elements
7:32 PM
man versus society
7:32 PM
If those terms are not familiar to you now they will be by the time you get done with your first paper.
7:32 PM

Jamie
7:34 PM
Okay.

tichure
7:34 PM
so go do some reading and when you're ready to run some things by me in terms of actual application to one of the stories, I will be here
we will use this time on Wednesdays to solidify, clarify and exemplify what you will be doing on your papers.
7:35 PM
A dry run, if you will.
7:35 PM

Jamie
7:35 PM
Awesome. Got it.
