The following are the detailed assignments listed in the course calendar. Note that these concepts are also explained in my class, but the assignments largely come from your Counseling course. Furthermore, these assignments do NOT follow the book chronologically…and the length and depth of each essay are explained here. You must follow MY directions for full credit. Furthermore, you are to be working as rapidly as possible...when one assignment is signed off, move on to the next in the list.

Each item listed below is a separate assignment, except where noted.

  • EXPLANATION explain how theme, (power, equality e.g.) has been demonstrated through the events covered in the course. THESIS will state the purpose of the essay; (Organization is the key to my success.).

  • ANECDOTE (A BRIEF INCIDENT, NOT A LIFE STORY); Discuss an event that happened to YOU that changed the way you think about an aspect of your life.

  • COMPARISON/CONTRAST; in three or more paragraphs, discuss the two items that are comparable in specific detail. THESIS will state the focus of the essay (e.g., Although they have similar themes, “MOVIE A” is quite different from “MOVIE B”). The body will be a series of direct comparisons of the two items. If you mention an aspect of item, you must apply that to the other (e.g. Although “MOVIE A” uses humor, “MOVIE B “ does not).

  • DESCRIPTION; CLASSIFICATIONDescribe an didentify the members of a college campus. (7 para)

  • ARGUMENT discuss an argument addressed in the counseling course); in three or more paragraphs, discuss the sides of an controversial issue. THESIS will state the focus of the essay (e.g. Drug use in college is understandable). The body will be a series of points, with responses by BOTH sides of the argument. If you mention an argument on one side, you must supply that of the other as well (e.g. Members of the school administration say smoking pot is unlawful, although they observed, condoned or participated in such activities during their own college years). (4-7 para)

  • USING EXAMPLES; discuss the topic you have chosen from the history course, giving SPECIFIC EXAMPLES to support your view. THESIS will state the focus of the essay (e.g., Economics was a major factor in choosing a community college). The body will have the specific examples that elaborate on the point (e.g. specific ways economic forces led to attending school and attending a particular school).

  • DEFINITION; define a term with both the literal (dictionary) definition (if applicable ) as well as the pejorative term usage. THESIS will state the focus of the essay (e.g., The word “Baked” has both positive and negative meanings). The body will have specific examples of sentences that use the term and then your explanation of how that should be interpreted (e.g., The phrase “He’s baked” may mean something different in different contexts).

  • CAUSE AND EFFECT; in three or more paragraphs, show the cause and effect of a specific phenomenon. THESIS will state the focus of the essay (e.g., There are three main reasons I am in College). The body will be a series of direct links between one event and another. Use detail and specifics (e.g. Without my degree, I cannot pursue a carewer in Hand Modeling).

OUTSIDE REPORTS/RESEARCH ESSAY (mandatory) in three or more paragraphs, an item (Deforestation), person (Diane Fosse), or phenomenon (urbanization) in an essay that is supported by research. THESIS will state the focus of the essay (e.g. Knowing his life story sheds a great deal of light on the polticies of Ronald Reagan). The body will give specific details and statistics.
